Ida B. Wells Democratic Journalism Institute Fellowship

We believe one of the ways democracy is dying is because journalism is. The Ida B. Wells Democratic Journalism Institute is a program designed to recruit and train citizens in solid journalistic principles and practice to help ensure the republic thrives. The Lighthouse’s target population— communities primarily made up of Black and other people of color—are especially left in dire straits. And in as much as representation matters (if it does at all), the Black, brown and other minoritized populations aren’t represented in newsrooms either. In 2017, the American Society of News Editors found among 63 news-only websites and 587 newspapers, only 16.55 percent of the organizations’ staff were from oppressed groups. DJI and its fellowship is a non-profit-funded news entity that trains, incubates, employs and deploys emerging and mid-career journalists. Using to its advantage the flexibility of a non-traditional news and storytelling outlet, the program offers opportunities for participants to expand their writing and audience to communities most in need of information.
